Individual and Family Therapy/Parenting Help

At the Pass Center our therapy process actively focuses on solutions for individuals and families. By having you try new behaviors in a situation, or having you learn, understand, and use new skills in a relationship, healthy changes begin to happen immediately. This fuels the fire for further transformation and insight. We specialize in communication and relationship issues and offer counseling and coaching for parenting difficulties or family problems.

Couples Counseling

Couples counseling at Pass Center is a collaborative process. The therapist takes an active role in helping couples take their ability to communicate and connect to a new level. Because creating emotional safety is paramount, therapists aren’t shy about actively interrupting, coaching, and being directive during a session. The therapist works with the couple to identify areas that may be keeping them “stuck” and helps couples build the relationships skills they need to nurture true connection and intimacy in the relationship.

Post Adoption Counseling – International Adoption

  • Initial Adjustment Issues (Sleep, Food, “Velcro Kids”, etc)
  • Attachment Parenting/Attachment Issues
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Symptoms
  • Marital Tensions after Adoption
  • Grief & Loss Issues
  • Parents Struggling with Attachment
  • Emotional Regulation Issues
  • Post-Adoption Depression
  • Parenting & Discipline for children who’ve experienced trauma
  • Anger Issues

Many internationally adopted kids do fine and thrive after being placed in their homes with relatively few “bumps” in the road. Others struggle with emotional or behavioral issues that are related to early trauma, loss, compromised development of their emotional regulatory system. Some just need support with issues related to early loss, birth parent issues, or issues related to race or culture.

Therapists at the Pass Center understand, (from a developmental, neurological, and emotional perspective), how loss, trauma, or compromised attachment beginnings may have impacted your child’s emotional development and current functioning, but don’t rush to categorize all behaviors as adoption related or rush to label your child with disorders.

Pass Center works with families to develop an understanding of a child that is based on history, temperament, stage of development, and other factors. The primary goals of counseling are: 1) to empower parents to maximize their potential as healing agents in their children’s lives, 2) to give parents the skills, insight, and tools to better parent and connect with their child, 3) to target areas that might be helping or hindering a child’s emotional development, 4) to provide support, compassion, and empathy to parents who are dealing with challenging situations.

Phone Consultation

Pass Center offers phone consultation services for internationally adopting families. Phone consultation IS NOT psychotherapy and is NOT a substitute for psychotherapy.
Fee-for-service phone consultation is for families who desire input and consultation over the phone. Phone consultation can be very helpful for mild problems or for initial adjustment concerns.

Phone consultations are usually limited to between 1-3 sessions. If a client has ongoing needs or needs for more comprehensive services, Pass Center therapists will recommend that the client pursue counseling with a therapist in their area.

The fee for phone consultation is $75.00/hour. Call 720-837-3907 or e-mail info@passcenterforfamilies.com to set up a phone consultation.

Group Counseling

Pass Center groups are time-limited psycho-educational support groups. They are limited to between 5-8 people (or 3-4 couples) and are focused on specific issues. Groups usually meet for six sessions or eight sessions and are 1 to 1-½ hours long.

Group counseling can be a highly effective way to get education, insight, skills, and support as you move toward change and growth in a confidential and safe setting with people who are struggling with similar issues. Group members sign confidentiality contracts. Group safety and confidentiality are critical components of every group.

Participating in group counseling is also cost effective. (A six-session group usually costs 200.00 per person. The hourly rate averages between 20.00 to 25.00 an hour, compared to 90.00 to 100.00 an hour for individual counseling)

Group counseling is not meant as a replacement for individual, couple, or family work but can be a powerful catalyst for change and a place to learn and heal in community with other people.
